Nepal Constitution timetable amended
KATHMANDU: With less than 80 days remaining to ready a Constitution for the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the calendar for its release has been amended for the tenth time.
Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subhash Chandra Nembang said the amendment did not change the final date — May 28, 2010 — for launching the new Constitution.
As per the timetable, a total of 17 stages are required to deliver the people-oriented Constitution. The process has reached only the sixth stage. A draft of the new Constitution should have been prepared by now.
Now there will be lesser chances for people to put in their views as the time for such discussions have been reduced.
Nilamber Acharya, head of the constitutional committee, after holding a meeting with all parties represented in the Constituent Assembly, stated that the three major political parties — the UCPN (Maoist), the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML) — must take the lead in finishing the process by May 28.
