One killed, two injured in police firing in Uttar Dinajpur
Kolkata:One person was killed and two others injured when the police opened fire to disperse a violent mob, protesting over a land dispute at Srikishnapur village in the Islampur sub-division of West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district on Thursday.
The agitated mob set on fire three police vehicles and four State-run buses and blocked National Highway 31 for several hours, causing long traffic snarls on this busy route.
According to the Additional District Magistrate, Piyush Kanti Dutta, a plot owned by the Srikishnapur High School had been the bone of contention between the school authorities and refugee relief department for long.
“While the school authorities demanded that it owned the land, a patta from the State's refugee relief department showed it as government property. When the Block Land and Land Reform Officer visited the spot on the day with his team for inspection according to the District Magistrate's order, a group of local residents and students attacked the team,” Mr. Dutta told TheHindu.
A police team that rushed to the spot to rescue the officials were alsoattacked.
“The BLLRO and few policemen were injured from the bricks and stones pelted at them. A large police contingent was then sent to the spot who tried to bring the situation under control by charging batons first but was forced to fire when the residents refused to retreat,” Mr. Dutta said.
A person, identified as Dipak Mriddha, died on the spot, while a student of the school and another person were rushed to the hospital with bullet injuries.
The ADM said that the blockade on the National Highway was lifted by the police in the evening and a police picket has been posted at the village.
Bandh
Meanwhile, both the Uttar Dinajpur district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress, separately declared a 12-hour-bandh in the Islampur sub-division on Friday in protest against the incident.
